Where the street "An der Bachwiese" runs today, the Mühlbach used to flow. This was an artificially created watercourse that was fed from the springs on the Neuberg and in the Große Wiese. It drove the mill wheel of the Mitzmühle and then crossed Hasselstraße. Beyond the Mühlstraße it joined the Osterbach. The water power of this stream then served the grinders of the three lower mills. In addition, the water from the nearby springs was used. All the mills in Wackernheim were driven by water wheels with overshot gears.
By the middle of the 20th century, all the millers had ceased operations. The bed of the mill stream fell dry after the spring water was diverted into a canal in 1965.
By the way: In April 1876, the floods of a great storm caused great damage to the lower Wackernheim mills. In Heidesheim, the floods claimed eight lives.
