A community bakehouse was mentioned in Wackernheim as early as 1394. The last one was built around 1840, after the old baking oven and the building were in a very poor condition. According to old tradition, the house, including the oven and the garden, was leased to a baker at an annual interest. The baker was responsible for the maintenance of the bakehouse. The stone oven was built on the north side of the house. To the east was the associated bakehouse garden. The baker made the desired number of loaves of bread from the flour brought to him by the people of Wackernheim. He also baked already prepared cakes. The price for the baked goods was set by the community. The last community baker, Heinrich Bröde, practised his trade until the end of the 1960s.

Incidentally, when the new building was erected in 1840, there was the option of additionally equipping the oven with a fruit kiln to produce dried fruit, which is important for food in winter. It is not known whether this option was realised.
