Somewhat hidden behind the café and next to the Drusus Stone on the citadel, in building D, you will find the City Historical Museum, which has been around since 2003 and is still almost a hidden gem. The City Historical Museum Mainz is a private museum funded by membership fees, donations, and entrance fees. The museum is run by the Friends of the City Historical Museum Mainz e.V., which was established in May 1996.
In addition to an overview of the entire history of Mainz, it predominantly presents exhibits from the social and economic history of everyday life in the 19th and 20th centuries, which often evoke feelings of recognition and memory in visitors. In addition to a room for annually changing special exhibitions, there is a dedicated, impressively designed area focused on the Jewish history of Mainz. In addition to the exhibitions, lectures, readings of serious and humorous nature, book presentations, and concerts take place regularly.
