The carnival museum, which opened in 2004, presents the history of carnival in Mainz to visitors. From jester's caps, medals, guard uniforms and costumes to songbooks, programs and historical video and audio documents to excerpts from the famous television sessions “Mainz, wie es singt und lacht” (Mainz, as it sings and laughs), the exhibition offers a lively slice of Mainz history and culture.
The exhibits document carnival from its beginnings in 1837 to the present day. The political and literary tradition dates back to the Vormärz period, when there was no freedom of the press. Documents, photos and films from private and club collections provide a chronological overview up to the present day. Visitors can relive highlights of the TV carnival on several televisions. The museum is specially designed for children (seating area with TV) and people with limited mobility.
