The so-called "Mistkaut" between Nierstein and Nackenheim in the middle of the vineyards on the "Roten Hang", is located directly on the "RheinTerrassenWeg" and the "Butttenmännie-Wanderweg".
The relic of earlier times from agriculture and viticulture was once used as a temporary storage for manure. Today, wine tastings and festivals are held there. It takes its name from a rock niche (Kaut) in the Rotliegende. This was created by mining rock gravel (Kummer), which was used as fertiliser. Because of its high potash content, the introduction of Kummer into the fields caused a surprising growth spurt. One "biggelte" the gobble over winter and drove it over into the vineyard. When the cautery had reached a certain size, it was used as a temporary storage for the manure produced by the vineyards. A total of 3 such facilities still existed in 1965.
Today's "Mistkaut" is an enclosed courtyard where the year's supply of the vintners' most important necessities was stored and was already equipped with innovative technology at that time. In the meantime, the members of the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Nackenheim have extensively repaired the enclosing wall and prepared today's "Mistkaut". The "Table of Wine" invites hikers and cyclists to take a relaxing break with a wide view over the Rhine to the Odenwald and the Taunus.
The place can be rented through the local municipality of Nackenheim or the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein (local history and tourist office) by calling 06135-5625.
