Revolution 1848/49 in Rhineland-Palatinate. Lecture by Volker Gallé and traveling exhibition The revolution of 1848/49 marked Germany's emergence into democratic modernity. With the constitution of a National Assembly, which drew up a constitution for the German Reich, its central elements can be found not only in the Weimar Constitution of 1918, but also in the Basic Law of 1949. To mark the 175th anniversary of the March Revolution, the Institut für Landesgeschichte Rheinland-Pfalz e.V., together with the Stiftung Haus des Erinnerns - für Demokratie und Akzeptanz Mainz e.V. and the Verein für Sozialgeschichte Mainz e.V., has put together a traveling exhibition on the 1848/49 revolution, showing the prehistory, course and consequences of the revolution in what is now Rhineland-Palatinate. Local examples are used to illustrate common and different regional lines of development, important players are presented and their role in the Frankfurt Pre-Parliament, in the National Assembly in St. Paul's Church and in the “Imperial Constitutional Campaign” is highlighted. The traveling exhibition entitled “...the black, red and gold flag of freedom flies everywhere. The Revolution of 1848/49 in Rhineland-Palatinate” can be seen in Alzey until 15.12.2024 in the Alzey Museum.
