The Barrelhouse Jazzband plays classic jazz, early swing, New Orleans renaissance, and Caribbean rhythms - expressive, inventive music, deeply rooted in blues, spiced with a touch of "show".
In January 2024, REIMER VON ESSEN and HORST SCHWARZ handed over their part in the band to two younger musicians, clarinetist and saxophonist MATTHIAS SEUFFERT, and trumpeter JOACHIM LÖSCH. Both have previously filled in as guests in the band and are a guarantee for the preservation of tradition and the development of the band. Their virtuosity in mastering the band style is impressively demonstrated in the last two tracks of the current CD "70 Years Barrelhouse Jazzband - forever new". As can be heard, they harmonize perfectly with Frank Selten, the band’s saxophonist since 1961, who remains in the three-part brass section.
MATTHIAS SEUFFERT has admired the Barrelhouse Jazzband since he was six years old, took lessons from Reimer von Essen, and has become an internationally sought-after soloist with his style. He deeply regrets that Reimer and Horst are retiring and says, "Over many years, we have had a close friendship and have occasionally played music together. Now I am very much looking forward to the opportunity to help shape the band. It is an honor for me!" The versatile, virtuosic trumpeter JOACHIM LÖSCH has studied in the Netherlands and the USA, played in a variety of formations, and is particularly fascinated by the sound of Louis Armstrong and the drive of 30's big bands: "It is a great joy and an honor for me to play music with the musicians of this legendary band. They are the role models of my youth! I look forward to continuing the great tradition of this band together with them."
