Nan Goldin became known as a photographer; without her there would be no comparable memory of early New York punk and also no first images of the recently so-called LGBT subcultures.

Filmmaker Poitras sensitively and carefully documents the tragic death of her sister Barbara Goldin. Nan Goldin was only 11 years old at the time. Another topic is the confrontation with a previously unknown disease: AIDS.
