Ingelheim 774 AD – starting signal for the Palatinate in Ingelheim?
Short lecture
In 774, Charlemagne's stay in Ingelheim was reported for the first time. On his way back from the conquest of the Lombard Empire in northern Italy, where he had himself crowned King of the Lombards, Charles stopped briefly in Ingelheim and sent four "bands" into the Saxon War. Hartmut Geißler, board member of the Ingelheim Historical Association, explains the exact circumstances of the visit in his lecture. He also considers where the king and his royal entourage may have stayed in Ingelheim. Last but not least, the speaker asks whether Charlemagne had the idea for building what would later become the Palatinate during his first visit.
