The “most radical place in the province” – Ober-Ingelheim 1848

French Revolution, Mainz Republic, Hambach Festival, National Assembly, irregulars, assassination attempt, treason trial - and Ingelheim citizens in the middle of it all. This is a brief outline of the history of the democracy movement in Germany in the first half of the 19th century.
Who were the 270 people from Ingelheim who, after the failure of the Frankfurt National Assembly and the rejection of the first German constitution by conservative delegates, risked their lives in the fight for freedom in unity in the months of May to June 1849? Were they freedom fighters or rebels? As residents of the “most radical place in the province,” as the Darmstädter Zeitung wrote in May 1849, did they belong to the elite population or to the precariat? And who were the eight people from Ingelheim who were charged with high treason before the assize court in Mainz after the end of the revolutionary uprising in the southwest? Graduate museologist Barbara Timm from the Ingelheim Historical Association will provide answers to all of these questions on October 10, 2024.
