"Gustav Mahler - a restless soul in the crisis of Romanticism"
In this concert, vocal and chamber music works by Gustav Mahler will be performed in their original versions and arrangements. Members of the Bergisch Gladbach Symphony Orchestra
Soloists: Marina Russmann (soprano) and Falko Hönisch (baritone) Piano and overall direction: Roman Salyutov
Without Gustav Mahler's music, the crisis of late Romanticism, closely tied to the intellectual state of society around the turn of the century 1900, cannot be comprehensively understood. Restlessly and feverishly, the composer sought to reflect and understand aspects of human existence such as life and death, happiness and despair, justice and fate in his works.
Marina Russmann, soprano
Soprano Marina Russmann studied opera and concert singing at the music colleges in Mainz, Cologne, and Bologna. Private studies led her to Neumar Starling and Eike Wilm Schulte. Marina Russmann was supported by Villa Musica, Camerata Nuova, Erasmus, and the Wiesbaden Wagner Foundation. She has performed at leading German theaters such as the state theaters of Mainz and Wiesbaden and at the chamber opera in Rheinsberg, as well as at significant festivals like the "Nibelungen Festival" in Worms and the "Festival gegen den Strom" at the Lahn. Recitals and concert engagements (including under Frieder Bernius) have taken the singer to Hungary, South Tyrol, England, Denmark, and the USA. In May 2016, she debuted in Hawaii as “Tosca” (Puccini) alongside Keith-Ikaia Purdy. In summer 2018, she performed several concerts with him during a concert tour in Florida.
Falko Hönisch, baritone
Falko Hönisch has won multiple awards at international competitions. As an opera singer, Hönisch, who is also a permanent ensemble member at the state theaters in Kassel and Darmstadt, has been seen on stage in over 35 roles at numerous opera houses in Germany as well as in Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, France, and Thailand under the direction of renowned conductors. As a concert singer, he has performed at prestigious concert venues such as the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Philharmonie Berlin, the Tonhalle Düsseldorf, the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Salle Pleyel in Paris, the Philharmonie Am Gasteig Munich, and the Halle Handel Festival. As a song singer, Falko Hönisch has worked on both major romantic song cycles and unknown works as well as commissioned compositions by contemporary composers.
Roman Salyutov, piano and overall direction
Roman Salyutov attended the music lyceum within the St. Petersburg State Conservatory, where he studied piano and conducting (choral and orchestral conducting) and graduated "with distinction" in 2003. He then studied piano at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory and received his diploma in 2008. Afterward, he completed a master's degree in piano at the Cologne University of Music until 2010. In 2011, he earned his doctorate in philosophy at the University of Paderborn with a thesis on the piano works of César Franck. His various degrees allow him to engage actively in various areas of cultural and musical life. He performs as an internationally sought-after pianist, chamber musician, and soloist with orchestras. His extensive repertoire of piano and orchestral literature ranges from the Baroque to the present. His special preference is for romantic music.
