Art at lunchtime
Mourning, pain and hope - Göbel's monumental work "Warrior's Honor" in the hall church
Short lecture

The monumental mural “Warrior’s Honor” was the first memorial to those from Nieder-Ingelheim who died in World War I in 1922 in the hall church. The focus there is on the misery of the war and the suffering of those left behind. The young painter and graphic artist Ludwig Göbel (1889-1964), himself a war veteran from Nieder-Ingelheim, had completed his artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich at the time it was created and was already working successfully as a freelance artist with his own studio in Frankfurt am Main. Pastor Adolf Korell (1872-1941) gave him largely free rein to design the picture.

The lecture by art historian Hilke Portwich M. A. explores the process of creating the expressive painting, which is now kept in the Ingelheim city archives. Preliminary drawings and drafts are presented that have been rediscovered in the course of the scientific inventory of Ludwig Göbel's estate in recent years. Some of his pictures, which show views from the hall area around the hall church, will also be on display.
