Medieval Alzey had a defence wall even before it was granted town privileges. However, this was razed in 1260 after the siege by a Worms army. 17 years later, with the elevation of the town, Alzey once again presented itself as an "oppidum" with a town wall. Until well into the 19th century, this was to fulfil its functions, sometimes more poorly than well. What these functions were and how they changed over the course of history will be the subject of the next city history tour by the Alzey museum directors, Dr Eva Heller-Karneth and Rainer Karneth, on Friday 26 July from 17:00 to around 19:00, as well as the structural form of the fortification ring, its extent and the organisation of the city's defence system. And, of course, the remains of the former city wall, which are still visible today, will be examined during the city tour. Participation in the paid event organised by the Antiquities Society, the KVHS and the museum is only possible by registering by telephone via the Tourist Information Alzeyer Land & Rheinhessische Schweiz on 06731 / 49 57 00 or by email (museum@alzey.de). The meeting point is in front of the museum. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
