From the Rhine terraces to the Old Rhine

From Mainz in the north of Rheinhessen to Worms at the southern end of the region, the Rhine terraces stretch out, offering magnificent panoramic views of the Rhine plain and the hilly landscape of Rheinhessen.

One picturesque wine village after another lines up above the Rhine, in the immediate vicinity of the state capital Mainz, nestled in the steeply rising vineyards, providing visitors and locals with great places to stop for good wine and excellent food. A bit further downstream, you can marvel at the Rhine meadows and the Altrhein nature reserve, which is home to one of the most important bird protection areas.

A particularly rewarding way to experience the Rheinhessen Rhine terraces and the Altrhein is through extensive cycling or hiking tours on the well-marked bike and hiking trails in the region. But a visit to the Altrheinsee Eich should not be missed when staying in Rheinhessen!

Experience geology

The Rhine terraces and the Old Rhine offer magnificent insights into the geological history of the region. Through changes in the Rhine's course and varying climates, the terraced landscape of the Rhine terraces has formed over the last millions of years. Today, these terraces stand out as a significant wine-growing area and cultural landscape. Changes in the Rhine's course can also be impressively observed further down the slope in the Old Rhine branches, which were separated from the main stream due to the natural alteration of the river's course. The calm watercourses and wetlands are particularly impressive today due to their rich flora and fauna.
