The grapes come from a single vineyard with optimal growth conditions. Over a longer period of time, wines originating from this location must have exhibited a sustained high level of maturity. In Rheinhessen, Riesling and Pinot Noir are the only grape varieties allowed to be grown as "Großes Gewächs". The yield is limited to a maximum of 50 hl / ha. The grapes need to be harvested by hand and must have at least enough sugar to be fit for producing a "Spätlese".
The work in the vineyards and the yield level are monitored in each vineyard from vegetation to harvest. Before and after bottling, a tasting will be held by an examination board. None of the "VDP Großes Gewächs" wines will be released before the first weekend in September of the year following the harvest year.
