A place, where wine can be tasted and bought. It can be a wine shop in a winery, but also in other places. Tastings can be done spontaneously for few people, but also for larger groups, with a booking. In Rheinhessen, there has been a program, that awads excellent wineries with the expression "Rheinhessen Ausgezeichnet". "Weck"

Buns, mostly the "Paarweck" made with water, or the "Spitzweck". The weck is part of every tasting, as it helps neutralizing the taste buds. However, it is often mistaken as food by ignorant tasters, who immediately empty the basket, as soon as the tasting has started.

"Weck, Worscht and Woi"

The trinity of Mainz. These are symbols worn and celebrated on parades through the city durng carnival, but they are also consumed throughout the rest of the year for brunches, wine festivals or in winetaverns. During carival, there even is a local song worshipping the "three Ws" and declaring that nobody in Mainz can live without them.

Rheinhessen expression: »Wingertshaisjer« Stone buildings of varied design in the vineyards. Mostly from 18th or 19th Century. They offered the winemaker, his family, vineyard workers and grape harvesters protection from rain and sun and a served as a shelter during lunch break. Occasionally, they were also built as romantic watchtower or as Biedermeier arbour. Vineyard tour

In Rheinhessen, there is aspecial culture of vineyard tours, that is offered bymany winemakers: A "Weinbergsrundfahrt". It is a driving wine tasting. The visitors sit on a covered wagon pulled by a tractor. While taking a tour through the vineyards, they enjoy the classic "Weck, Worscht and Woi" picnic and good Rheinhessen wines, while passing beautiful views and other attractions.

Weinbruderschaft Rheinhessen

German expession for "wine fraternity Rheinhessen". Founded in October 1970 in Oppenheim, where it is also located ("Weinbruderschaft Rheinhessen zu Sankt Katharinen"). Purely idealistic union of friends of Rheinhessen wine from all professions and social classes with a limited number of members. The aim is to cultivate and promote wine culture, to increase the knowledge of wine, to stand up for the honor wine and to keep in touch with other wine fraternities. Weinforum Rheinhessen

Since 1987, the best wines and sparkling wines of the Chamber of Agriculture of Rhineland-Palatinate have been presented on this tasting every year on the last weekend of October (Friday / Saturday / Sunday) in Mainz. It is organized by the Chamber of Agriculture and Rheinhessenwein eV.

Wine jelly

Jelly made of wine, sugar and gelling aid. Has been offered by Rheinhessen winemakers as an addition to their product range for some years now.

IG Rheinhessian wine vault

Wine vaults

Former cattle stables with cross vaults, built by master mason Franz Ostermayer for the first time in Rheinhessen. After the dairy industry was abandoned, so far 45 such "cow chapels" have been converted into wine taverns, "Straußwirtschaften" and wine tasting rooms. The owners joined together in 1999 to form a "IG Rheinhessen Weingewölbe", which aims to cultivate and make use of these landscape-typical buildings.
