Lonsheimer Mandelberg

Lonsheimer Mandelberg

Almond, mantle, marl

Such a beautiful name, so many questions: The simplest explanation could be that almond trees were found there. Nowadays, almond trees blossom without any problems in sunny Rheinhessen, but also in the Middle Ages? Another interpretation suggests that the vineyard bears the shape of an almond. Well, with a lot of imagination! Almond could also be derived from the Middle High German "Mantel". Not the garment, but meant the forest mantle, the edge zone of a forest. Pine trees are said to have grown there. Today, various vines thrive on clay marl, including special ones such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Dorsa or Pinot Meunier. The Lonsheim lookout tower is not far away and belongs to one of the most beautiful Hiwwelt tours in Rheinhessen, the one in the "Aulheimer Tal".

Gau-Odernheimer Herrgottspfad

Gau-Odernheimer Herrgottspfad (Lord God's Path of Gau Odernheim)

Steep up to the crypt, steep site for Riesling vintners

A path to the Lord God? Yes! Or at least almost. A steep path winds its way from Gau-Odernheim up to the 246-metre-high Petersberg, on whose spire stood a three-nave basilica with crypt dating from the 10th century. The remains of the crypt, which were found from 1947 onwards, are impressive: this architecture is otherwise only found in central Italy, and for Rheinhessen it is unique. The single vineyard takes its name from the processions that have led to the top of the mountain on church feast days for centuries. Full-bodied Rieslings with a high aging potential thrive here on clay marl. The Petersberg cultural trail offers a variety of insights into history, geology, fauna and flora - and leads right through the middle of this single vineyard.

Alzeyer Rotenfels

Alzeyer Rotenfels

Red, white, yellow and and vineyard cottage.

There are two possible interpretations for the name’s origin: one option is that the term is based on a deforestation (German: “Rodung”). Obviously, an old area was cleared here, trees were felled and their roots removed. However, the name could also be derived from the colour red (German: “rot”), because the core area in the site consists of red topsoil, oxidised volcanic rock. There even is a song in Alzey, referring to the old site name Rotental (now part of the entire single vineyard): The song describes the single vineyard “Rotental”, where viney grow and claims that no real person coming from Alzey can live without wine. In addition to volcanic rock, there are also yellow-coloured loess soils and white limestone rocks. The single vineyard "Alzeyer Rotenfels" is south-facing and warm. The numerous vineyard cottages invite you to take a walk and rest. All grape varieties are grown here.
