Typically Rheinhessen - these are the distinctive whitewashed structures that stand out from the vineyards in many places in southern Rheinhessen. In the southern part of Rheinhessen, between Wendelsheim (Rheinhessen) and Bockenheim (Pfalz), about 30 of these special dome structures can be discovered.
Find out exactly what they are and how you can experience the Rheinhessen Trulli away from the Trullo Bike Tour here!
The vineyard cottages with their unique shape likely arrived in Rheinhessen in the 18th century with Apulian migrant workers. Due to their construction with thick walls and tiny windows, the Trulli provided protection from the summer heat during the strenuous work in the vineyards. However, the origin of these distinctive structures is not entirely clear. Throughout Germany, the Rheinhessen "weis Heisje" or "Wingertsheisje" are quite unique and can also be found in Apulia, Istria, Corsica, Ireland, Sweden, or southern France. You can visit these cottages during a hike or bike tour through the Rheinhessen landscape!
