Abenheimer Klausenberg

Secluded, elevated, fertile: The Klausenberg

The German word “Klause” (Latin from claudere "to close") means a secluded abode of a religious hermit. One of the most beautiful chapels in Rheinhessen is enthroned on the Klausenberg, above Abenheim: the Sankt Michael Kapelle (Chapel of St. Michael). Countess Agnes of Nassau is said to have been granted permission in 1298/99 to build a monastery with a chapel in Abenheim. Around the same time (vaguely dated to 1286), the vineyard was mentioned for the first time. Here you will find fertile loess soil for all the grape varieties of Rheinhessen. From the chapel, there is a magnificent view over the Wonnegau region all the way to Worms Cathedral. The Rheinhessen Way of St. James and the "Lutherweg 1521" trail pass by here. The Abenheim Sculpture Trail is very close.

Lutherweg 1521 in Rheinhessen

The "Lutherweg 1521 in Rheinhessen" is a section of the nearly 400 km long route, which Martin Luther followed about 500 years ago on his pilgrimage from the Wartburg in Thuringia to the Reichstag in Worms and back. According to the historical traditions his way in Rheinhessen took place mainly along the Rhine terrace between Oppenheim am Rhein and Worms. Luther raved about the particularly beautiful view at many Rhine Hessian sections of his way and was thrilled with the variety of vineyards. On the Luther Trail you can dive into the past and let the memories of the - in spite of everything - arduous Martin Luther's way of life come alive.

The nearly 44 km long "Lutherweg 1521 in Rheinhessen can be well divided into three stages:

  • Stage 1: Nierstein - Oppenheim - Guntersblum, 12 km
  • Stage 2: Guntersblum - Alsheim - Mettenheim - Bechtheim - Osthofen - Abenheim, 21 km
  • Stage 3: Abenheim - Herrnsheim - Worms Center, 11 km

RheinTerrassenWeg-stage Worms - Osthofen

The access to the RheinTerrassenWeg starts at Wormser Bahnhof. He follows the river Pfrimm, like a green band through Worms. On an old railway line you reach the beginning of the RheinTerrassenWeges at the imposing castle of Herrnsheim. Its English-style castle park is an exciting counterpoint to the almost endless appearing vineyards that characterize the path around the Abenheim Sculpture Trail to Osthofen with its mountain church and the historic Weinbergshäuschen.
