Sprendlinger Wißberg
Is thisreferring to a joke, a wise mountain or a meadow?
The Wißberg is one of the most beautiful and, at around 270 metres above sea level, the second highest elevation in Rheinhessen. Seven municipalities border it, including Sprendlingen. The single vineyard "Sprendlinger Wißberg" was already mentioned in documents in 720. First with the name "Witzerberg", then in 1372 with "zu Wisseberg" and in 1435 "uff dem Wyseberge". However, the stream is based on an old European watercourse name and has nothing to do with meadow (German: Wiese), wit (German: Witz) or even wisdom (German: Weisheit). A variety of grape varieties thrive on sand and clay marl. The "Via Vinea" offers 22 experience stations: Vineyard huts, barefoot path, vineyard swing, table of wine, labyrinth and panorama places.
