Night of the museum

on 02.08.2024 from 17:00 to 19:00 o'clock

The Alzey Democracy Tour focuses on the period of around sixty years between the Mainz Republic of 1792/93 and the March Revolution of 1848/49. Freedom and equality as defining concepts of the Enlightenment became a political and socio-cultural reality on the left bank of the Rhine during the French period between 1797 and 1814. Their defense against the restoration of the princes led to the March Revolution of 1848. The liberal deputy Heinrich von Gagern first became Hessian Minister President and then President of the National Assembly in Frankfurt's Paulskirche. He voted in favor of a constitutional monarchy. However, the majority of Rheinhessen supported a republic. All of this has shaped the mentality of the region to this day.
The tour takes you to sixteen places in the city and lasts around two hours. It tells the story of the Freemasons, Napoleon, the Belmont family, Ludwig Bamberger, the Matty family, the Seuberts, the Preetorius family, the German Catholics, the Haas brothers and Eduard Lehne and their ideas for a new society in a time of many ruptures and upheavals.
