2 November 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of Georg Scheu's death. To mark the occasion, the Alzey Museum is dedicating a special exhibition to what is probably ‘Germany's most successful grapevine breeder’. Eight of the grape varieties he bred in Alzey between 1916 and 1932 are still listed in the Federal Register of Varieties, including the Scheurebe named after him. But Scheu was not just a grape breeder. He was also a ‘pioneer’ of modern viticulture in Rheinhessen, and indeed in Germany. The knowledge he gained in extensive series of experiments and in viticultural practice, which he popularised in his ‘Winzerbuch’ in 1936 and also in many essays and lectures, had a long-lasting effect on viticulture, some of which is still felt today. A bon mot expresses the reputation and thus also the professional authority that Scheu had, especially among Rhine-Hessian winegrowers. Whenever there were unanswered questions, uncertainties or even disputes, the phrase was heard again and again: ‘Now let's wait and see what our Scheu has to say about these things’. However, it is not only Georg Scheu's professional life achievements in and for viticulture that are traced in this special exhibition. Facets beyond the professional, which arose from his many talents and interests, are also illuminated and allow the artist and linguistic subtlety of Scheu to shine through.
